One of the most interesting and serene walks to be found anywhere in America is Philadelphia’s winding Kelly Drive with its Boathouse Row. Philadelphia is a world center for rowing and the site of The Dad Vail, the country’s largest annual collegiate regatta. Boathouse Row (also called “The Schuylkill Navy”) has fifteen colorful and diverse structures housing rowing clubs and their racing shells. Erected in the mid to late 19th century, the boathouses are designed in a variety of styles, including Mediterranean, Picturesque Victorian, Arts and Crafts, Eastlake, Shingle, and Colonial Revival. They are built of stone, brick, shingle, and stucco. At the far left of this painting, the Undine Barge Club is pictured (taking its name from Teutonic folklore), which was designed by noted architect Frank Furness. Boathouse Row is designated as a National Historic Landmark.
