The USS Olympia represents the transition of the U.S. Navy’s fleet from sail to steam, and is the only surviving steel warship of her era. Launched in 1892, the 244 foot-long ship served in the 1898 Spanish-American War where she played a pivotal role as Commodore George Dewey’s flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay. As a result of the war, Spain granted Cuba its independence and lost the last remnants of its empire. The U.S. emerged as a world and naval power having gained Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Olympia was decommissioned in 1899, but was mobilized for service several times until she was permanently decommissioned in December 1922. The Olympia is currently moored at the Independence Seaport Museum on the Delaware River in Philadelphia where she has served as a museum ship since 1957.
