The Academy of Music is one of Philadelphia’s most beloved places. Built from 1855-57 in the Italianate style, the exterior mirrors the Exchange in Hamburg, Germany. The interior, one of the most lavish in the city, is patterned after the neo-Baroque La Scala in Milan, Italy. The Academy served as the home of the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra and now hosts the Philadelphia Opera Company and other notable performing groups. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
