Launched in 1904, the majestic Moshulu is a four-masted steel barque cargo ship built on the River Clyde in Scotland. She measures 396 feet in length, 46.9 feet in width (beam), and 212 feet in height (keel to masthead tip). The ship has no auxiliary propulsion. Originally a German ship named Kurt, she transported coal, nitrate, and coke to and from South America, Australia and Europe. Kurt was seized by the U.S. in World War I and was renamed the Moshulu by Edith Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson. This unusual name means “one who fears nothing” in the Seneca language. Later, the Moshulu participated in the “Grain Race” from Australia to Europe by way of Cape Horn. Eventually she was shipwrecked. The Moshulu is now a popular restaurant at Philadelphia’s Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River.
