Christ Church was founded in 1695 and the building completed in 1744. The massive tower and steeple, once the tallest structure in all the colonies, was financed in part by lotteries managed by Benjamin Franklin. As a parish of the Church of England (Anglican), on July 4, 1776, Christ Church publicly banished King George’s name from divine worship, a dangerous act. Members included Franklin, George Washington, Betsy Ross, and Andrew Hamilton. After the revolution, Christ Church was instrumental in organizing the Episcopal Church in America. As the site of this historic event, it is often referred to as the  “Mother Church” or the “Patriots’ Church.”
