Built in 1804, Head House served as a firehouse and is the oldest in the country. It is adjoined by the Second Street Market, constructed in 1745, which provided early Philadelphia with food from the fertile farms of western New Jersey. This market is the oldest of such structures in America. Both Head House and the Market are fine examples of Federal style architecture. Surrounded by cobblestone streets, they sit at the foot of South Street in the Society Hill neighborhood, a popular area for shopping and dining. Head House Square is a National Historic Landmark.
