Pennsylvania Hospital, the first hospital in the United States, was built from 1755 to 1794 for the treatment of the poor and mentally ill. Dr. Thomas Bond, inspector of contagious diseases for the Port of Philadelphia, founded the hospital and Benjamin Franklin raised the funds to construct it. The center section, as shown in this painting, is one of the finest examples of Federal style in the country. Faced with marble, the first floor supports giant marble Corinthian pilasters stretching from the second floor to the cornice. An immense circular amphitheater tops the structure. It was here that modern surgery was first performed in the United States. The famous painting by Benjamin West, “Christ Healing the Sick” (approximately 9’ x 14’), hangs prominently in the main passageway on the first floor.
