A solitary individual in prayer is depicted within the Church of the Holy Trinity, Episcopal, Rittenhouse Square. As an imposing anchor of Philadelphia’s most prominent open space, the church is one of the first accurate renditions of Romanesque “Norman style” structures in the United States. The arcaded chancel apse highlights the magnificent interior, with gold columns supporting a semi-domed ceiling. It is illuminated at the apex by a Tiffany stained glass skylight and features a massive triptych of the Nativity (as shown faintly in this painting). This mural was completed in 1942 by famed muralist Hildreth Meière in honor of the second rector of the church, Phillips Brooks, who wrote the words to the Christmas carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” The organist of the church, Lewis Redner, then put the carol to music. The Church of the Holy Trinity is on the National Register of Historic Places.
