Perched high above Manayunk, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church has stood vigil over this picturesque “old world” community for over two hundred years. Painted from across the river, its massive stone gothic tower glows in the sunlight. The church’s turrets, tracery, high nave, chancel, and large stained glass windows are an architectural delight. The Manayunk neighborhood, located on the Schuylkill River in the City of Philadelphia, contains the first canal begun in the United States. In 1819, mills and factories began to spring up along the river. For the next 100 years, the area became an important manufacturing village. Today Manayunk has retained its old neighborhood charm with its modest two– and three–story row homes, hilly cobblestone streets, and large churches clinging to the hillside. The area’s name comes from the Lenape Indian phrase, “A place to drink.”
