Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, a National Historic Landmark, was completed in 1849 by revered architect John Notman. It is regarded as one of the nation’s finest examples of the Decorated Gothic style of the 13th and 14th centuries. The organ is one of the largest and considered among the best in Philadelphia. At the High Altar, the great east window depicts the Ascension of Christ. To the south of the nave is the Lady Chapel donated and furnished by Rodman Wanamaker in memory of his wife. It contains a world-renowned, gem-encrusted silver altar with nearly 150 individually sculpted saints and scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The nave ceiling is the first known example in the United States of a stone vault.
