Located in suburban Philadelphia, Longwood Gardens is one of the premier botanical gardens in the United States and boasts one of the world’s greatest greenhouse structures. It was originally purchased by industrialist Pierre S. du Pont (1870–1954) for his private estate. His summer home is depicted here. Today, the 1,077-plus acre Longwood Gardens consists of twenty outdoor gardens, magnificent fountains, and twenty indoor gardens within 4.5 acres of heated greenhouses.
